Bandidas Taqueria

Bandidas falls into the category of another “pleasant surprise”. For whatever reason, I was expecting a dive-y, hole-in-the-wall kinda place. Instead I found a charming space full of character and characters. Everyone from hipsters to farmers were packed into this buzzing space decorated with recycled furniture and local art.

Before I go any further, I should mention that Bandidas is vegetarian. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I just thought I should let you know in case you show up expecting carnitas or de lengua. Their philosophy is a more “sustainable” bent. The menu is several plays on huevos and frijoles. The Hicks Benny was a rainbow of colours – yellow cornbread muffins topped with guacamole, eggs and green tomatillo salsa accompanied by pink-ish pinto beans, roasted orange yams and potatoes, and purple cabbage. My friend’s Pineapple French Toast, while decidedly more monochromatic, was just as tasty.

We left feeling super satisfied.

La Petite France

After several attempts to meet (life happens), my friend and I finally connected at La Petite France. I chose the location based upon the fact that it was only footsteps from her place. This patisserie serves traditional French pastries and for breakfast, a simple menu of croque madame et monsieur, omelette, quiche or crepes.

Because sweets are their specialty, we couldn’t resist dessert and we sampled the madeleines and macarons. Although, the sweetest aspect of the place was our très French server, and the miscommunications due to the language barrier were comical and charming.
